Please print this checklist to take with you when you pick up the boat.

1. PICKING UP THE BOAT

Start at gate card reader (approx 70 feet in front of gate, on left). Texins Sailing Club lock box is under card reader. Inside there will be a magnetic card to open the gate and a key to open the garage door. Please RETURN THESE TO LOCK BOX BEFORE YOU LEAVE TEXINS. Note: If somebody else is picking up a boat at the same time, you will need to get their attention so that they can hand you gate card. Please contact the Rental Officer for the combination to the box, and instructions on how to open it.

Open Texins garage door #5.
Hook trailer to towing vehicle:
Raise the trailer jack.
Pull up on tongue after coupling to be sure trailer is securely attached.
Trailer must be locked to vehicle AT ALL TIMES.
Safety chains should criss-cross under trailer tongue, with just enough slack to allow trailer to turn freely.
Hooks should be slipped in from the bottom.
SAFETY CHAINS MUST BE USED.
Lights must be plugged in, with enough slack in the wire to allow for turning. Be careful that the wire can't tangle in the coupling or drag on the ground.
Take AT LEAST one life vest per person (in storage area behind door #5).
Place the Carry-All Bag (large blue bag, containing sails, with pre-inserted battens, rudder, tiller, centerboard, and inspection port covers), INSIDE the towing vehicle. Do not transport this bag nor its contents in the boat, or in the exposed back of a pickup truck!
Note that all the running rigging (mainsheet, outhauls, boom vang, cunnigham, clew-tie-down) are pre-attached to their appropriate places in the boat, and should be left where they are.
Check for hull plug (bottom outside of transom).
(Laser only) Check for the cockpit drain plug (back of hiking strap)
Check tie-downs:
- At the bow.
- Strap across middle the boat (need tightening).
- Spars (2 mast pieces, and boom) secured to brackets, brackets secured to boat.
Check lights:
- running lights.
- brake lights.
- left signal.
- right signal.
- emergency flashers.
Lock garage as you leave. If you opened any other garage doors, make sure you lock them as you leave.

RETURN GATE CARD AND GARAGE KEY TO LOCK BOX OUTSIDE GATE.

2. AT THE LAKE

Disconnect electrical connector.
Stay clear of the ramp but not too far away (don't tie up the ramp more than necessary).
CHECK FOR OVERHEAD ELECTRICAL WIRES - THEY CAN BE LETHAL
Check for tree limbs, wires, etc., which might interfere with the raised mast.
Insert Hull Drain Plug (tied to travel near the transom)
(Laser only) Insert cockpit drain plug (tied to back of hiking strap)
Remove from Carry All Bag (CAB) inspection port covers and install - be careful not to "cross thread them)
Untie and remove the spar holders - put them inside your car.
Assemble the mast, remove the sail from the CAB, and slip sail onto the mast, being careful to align the grommet on the sail with the gooseneck - this will keep the sail from "twisting".
Step the mast with the sail onto the boat and carefully drop into the mast-step.
Immediately attach the Cunningham - run it from the gooseneck up into the grommet near the tack and then back down through the fairlead on deck and to the aluminum cleat. Make sure to tie a figure-8 knot as this is the only thing keeping the whole rig from falling to the bottom of the lake in the event of a capsize.
Make sure that the outhaul is as loose as it can be, and the clew shackle is as far "forward" as possible.
Back down ramp until the wheels of the trailer are 2-3 feet past the water's edge.
Remove the Rudder from the CAB and install the rudder, then the tiller - taking care that the tiller runs UNDERNEATH the traveler bridle, but ABOVE the traveler controls.
Remove the Centerboard from the CAB and place in cockpit.
Slip the forward section of the boom onto the gooseneck pin.
"Walk" the boom so it is near the foot of the sail, grab the clew, and quickly attach to the shackle on the boom.
Clip on the boom vang, but make sure it is very loose.
Disconnect the strap, and place inside vehicle.
Disconnect the bow from the trailer, and launch the boat by pushing it backwards into the water.
Insert the centerboard, and attach the shock cord to the Cunningham fairlead, or to the mast.
Have a helper hold the boat while you put away your vehicle and trailer, or tie the boat to a nearby dock. If you must pull the boat partially out of the water, remove the centerboard, and try to pull the boat unto a soft area (i.e. grass or sand), or place a cushion (i.e. life jacket) underneath the front of the boat.
Park the car/trailer.
Put on life vests (or make sure they're in the boat).
Lower the centerboard, as needed.
Lower the rudder and cleat in the down position.
Go sailing.

3. LEAVING THE LAKE
Sail the boat to a nearby dock and tie up. Make sure to release the boom vang so the boat does not want to sail itself.
Back up the trailer into the water.
Walk or sail the boat from the dock to the trailer.
As soon as you no longer need to sail the boat (i.e. when you reach the trailer, or if you can walk the boat from the dock to the trailer) pull on the quick release line (red) of the clew shackle, this will release and de-power the sail, and cause the boom to fall onto the boat (or out of the boat).
Remove the centerboard, and place inside the boat.
Insure that the rudder downhaul line is released
Pull the boat onto the trailer.
Secure the bow to the trailer.
Remove the tiller and rudder and place inside the cockpit (for now)
Pull the trailer SLOWLY and CAREFULLY away from the ramp.
Remove the Cunningham from the Aluminum cleat, and fairlead.
Disconnect the boom vang from the boom.
Pull out the mast and sail out of the mast step, and lay down on a nearby grassy area (if available), or, on top of the boat.
Retrieve the CAB from the vehicle, and place inside - just as you found - the centerboard, rudder, tiller, and inspection port covers.
Fold the sail - leaving the battens inside the sail - and place the folded sail inside the CAB, as well.
Remove the hull drain plug.
(Laser only) remove the cockpit drain plug.
P-13 if there is any water in the cockpit please bail it out.
If you suspect that any water has entered the hull - drain it - this cab be done by disconnecting the bow from the trailer, then pushing the boat back about 4 feet, and then leaning on the transom of the boat while checking for water drainage out of the hull drain hole.
Replace the strap accross the center of the boat.
Place the spar supports on the boat, and then place the spars on the support.
Secure the spars to the supports, and then the supports to the boat - using the "bungee cords" / rubber straps - just as you found them (note on the laser use a bungee cord to secure the spars to the support, and then rubber straps to secure the supports to the trailer. On the P-13 use one bungee cord to tightly bundle the spars near the stern; then a second bungee cord to bundle and then secure the spars to the Cunningham cleat, and them pull in tightly and cleat the mainsheet.
"Stuff" the tails of all the lines into the cockpit, or, down inspection ports.
Plug in and check lights:
- running lights.
- brake lights.
- left signal.
- right signal.
- emergency flashers.
Re-check safety chains.
Take one last walk around, looking for loose items.

4. RETURNING THE BOAT

PLEASE CLEAN THE BOAT PRIOR TO RETURN.

(P-13 only) - make sure to bail all the water out of the cockpit. Please use a sponge. We do not want any "biology experiments" growing in the boat.
Disconnect light plug.
Remove safety chains.
Lower trailer jack, unhitch the trailer, and roll the boat into the garage.
Re-lock coupler in closed position.
Remove the Carry All Bag (CAB) from your vehicle and place on top of the boat (SAIL MUST BE DRY PRIOR TO STORAGE).
Return life preservers to storage area behind garage door #5.
Loosen tie-down strap.
Lock garage and gate as you leave. If you opened any other doors, make sure you lock them as you leave.
PLACE GATE CARD AND GARAGE KEY IN BOX OUTSIDE GATE PRIOR TO GOING HOME!
