Please print this checklist to take
with you when you pick up the boat.
1.
PICKING UP THE BOAT
Start
at gate card reader (approx 70 feet in front of gate, on left).
The
Texins Sailing Club lock box is hanging under the card reader.
Inside
is a magnetic card to open the gate and a key to open the garage door.
Please RETURN THESE TO LOCK
BOX BEFORE YOU LEAVE TEXINS.
Open
box as follows:
1. Press the combination numbers in
any order, using the slide
button to clear if you enter a wrong digit.
2. Pull down on the latch and tilt
forward the front panel. It is connected with a rubber
strap so it will not fall off.
3. You will need to enter the
combination again to tilt the front panel up into place when
you close it.
4. If you have any problems, slide
the clear button and start over.
Open
texins garage door #5.
Roll
the boat out of the garage CAREFULLY – watch for the boat hitting the
Whaler on the left, the precision on the right, or the frame of the
garage
door. Also watch out for the stupid
poles by the power transformer.
Hook
trailer to towing vehicle:
-
Remove the tongue hitch lock using the supplied combination and open
the hitch.
-
Lower jack to place tongue on hitch ball, close and lock.
-
Pull up on tongue after coupling to be sure trailer is securely attached.
-
Swing up the jack by pulling on the release pin.
-
Trailer must be locked to vehicle AT ALL TIMES.
-
Safety chains should criss-cross under trailer tongue, with just enough
slack to allow trailer to turn
freely. Hooks should be slipped in from
the bottom. SAFETY CHAINS MUST BE USED.
-
Lights must be plugged in, with enough slack in the wire to allow for turning. Be careful
that the wire can't tangle in the
coupling or drag on the ground.
-
Place the following INSIDE your vehicle, please do not transport in the
boat, or in the exposed bed of a pickup truck!
- AT LEAST one life vest per
person (in storage area behind door #5).
- Floatation cushion (REQUIRED on
this boat), should already be in boat.
-
Blue Carry All Bag – containing rudder,
tiller, drain plug, etc.
-
Sails, located in a long gray sail bag
and should already be in boat. Try to
avoid folding the sail bag, but if you
must do so, fold it only once, about the center of the bag.
NOTE:
Boat registration is also required, it can be found on port side under the cuddy.
-
Check tie-downs:
- At the bow (both winch
line
AND safety line)
- Strap across middle of
boat
(needs tightening).
- Mast securely tied front
and
rear.
- No loose wires or lines,
which
could bounce or blow over the side when traveling.
-
Check lights:
- running lights.
- brake lights.
- left signal.
- right signal.
- emergency flashers.
-
Lock garage as you leave. If you
opened any other garage doors, make sure
you lock them as you leave. Gate will open
automatically as you
approach from the inside. Care must go
over the sensor which is in the
middle of the gate about 15 feet back from gate.
-
RETURN GATE CARD AND GARAGE KEY TO LOCK BOX OUTSIDE GATE.
- enter combination, pull
slide
latch down, tilt cover forward.
Stop AT LEAST ONCE PER HOUR to
check wheel bearings, hitch, and tie-downs.
2.
AT THE
-
Disconnect tail-light electrical connector before going in water!
-
Stay clear of the ramp but not too far away (don't tie up the ramp more
than
necessary).
-
CHECK FOR OVERHEAD ELECTRICAL WIRES - THEY CAN BE LETHAL
-
Check for tree limbs, wires, etc.,
-
Remove the strap off the back of the mast at the transom, and the black
bungee securing the mast to the trailer cradle at the bow.
-
Disconnect the forestay from the bow
-
There are two bungee cords securing the standing rigging to the mast
near
the bow. Remove the lower of the two,
but leave the upper one connected for the time being.
-
raise mast. Easiest way to raise the mast is to place the throwable PFD
on the ground next to the boat – near the mast step, and have one
person raise
the mast so it stands on the cushion.
Then hand the vertical mast to a person standing in the boat,
who will
slip it through the hole in the foredeck, and gently lower the mast
onto the
mast-step. If you are not used to this
procedure DO NOT attempt it in strong winds, or without sufficient
(strong)
help!
-
Remove the remaining bungee cord from around the mast and rigging and
connect the standing rigging as follows:
-
Connect shrouds to chain-plate.
-
Remove the pin from the Adjustable stay adjuster on the forestay, and
make sure it is OPEN!
-
Disconnect (temporarily) the winch line and the safety line, and attach
the forestay.
-
Insert the spacers around the mast step (they should be in the carry
all
bag)
-
Close the adjustable stay adjuster, and re-insert the pin – if you do
not, then you are risking a broken mast!
-
reattach the trailer winch line (hook it around the forestay) or the
boat
will fall off the trailer, causing you great embarrassment.
-
Place mast tie-down straps, red "flag", and mast support, and
two bungee cords inside your vehicle.
-
Put sails and flotation cushion in the boat and bend on the sails (attach to
forestay and boom).
-
Install rudder
-
Insert the tiller into the rudder head – you will need to remove the
small screw by hand, and the re-insert it.
-
Make sure that the rudder is cleated in the UP position.
-
Insert BOTH drain plugs (should be in the carry-all bag)
-
Back down ramp (use of wheel chocks is a good idea)
-
Remove center hold-down strap
-
Disconnect winch and safety line from bow
-
Attach a painter (should be in the carry-all bag)
-
Release boat into water, and pull boat clear of the ramp.
-
Park the car and trailer.
-
Put on life vests.
Go sailing and for God’s sake don’t drown!
3.
LEAVING THE
Sails
should be lowered and boat positioned off to one side of ramp.
Make
sure that BOTH rudder, and centerboard, are CLEATED in the UP position.
Remove
the boat from the water:
- Back car/trailer down ramp, and
put boat on trailer.
- Remove the painter
- Attach BOTH winch line AND safety
line to boat BEFORE PULLING BOAT UP RAMP.
- CHECK FOR OVERHEAD
ELECTRICAL WIRES - THEY
CAN BE LETHAL
- Check for tree limbs, wires,
etc., which might interfere with the raised mast.
- Pull boat to a place clear of the
ramp (watch overhead).
- Spread sails to dry, preferably
on grass (stay off parking lot surface, grease and oil are very bad for
the
sail fabric).
Tie
down boat:
-
strap across middle of boat
- ensure that the mainsheet
is
completely released and loose (no need to coil the mainsheet
- remove the rudder, tiller,
drain plugs, and place inside carry-all-bag.
- remove pin from forestay
shroud adjuster, and OPEN the adjuster.
- remove mast spacers and
place
inside carry-all-bag
- disconnect forestay and
shrouds
- reinsert all 4 pins into
shrouds, and shroud adjuster. (DON’T LOSE THE BLOODY PINS THEY ARE
TWENTY BUCKS
EACH AND WILL BE TAKEN OUT OF YOUR HIDE!)
- wrap one small bungee
around
the mast and standing rigging
- reinsert mast support into
rudder holder
- have one person stand in
boat,
remove the mast, and hand it to a person standing on the ground near
the boat –
get extra help if you are not very strong, not used to this procedure,
or if
there is strong wind; mast can fall down and go boom on your head or
your car
or both!
- place mast in the supports.
- secure the mast to the
trailer
mast support with two black bungee cords.
- secure the end of the
shrouds
to the mast with the second small bungee cord.
- lead the forestay through
the
trailer mast support and attach to the bow
- secure the back of the
boom
with the clew quick disconnect shackle, and then hang the boom off the
mast
using the carabiner. Use the other
bungee to secure the boom to the mast tightly.
- reinstall the red “flag”
to
the mast at the transom end.
- check bow safety line to
make
sure it is properly secured.
Plug
in and check lights:
- Running lights.
- Brake lights.
- Left signal.
- Right signal.
- Emergency flashers.
Recheck
safety chains.
Roll
up the sails
- Insure that both sails are
dry! If they are wet, then place them
inside
your vehicle, return them to the garage with the boat, spread them to
dry on the boat, and then
return the next day to properly
roll up the sails.
- Fold the mainsail in half
–
bringing the head to the clew - then roll the sail towards the foot,
taking care not to "fold" the sail.
- Similarly, fold the jib
about
the top-most seam, lining up the leech on jib, and roll the sail.
- Place both sails inside
the
long sail bag, and place bag inside your towing vehicle.
There is no need to remove the battens. The
Jib sheets can be left in the boat.
- Try
to avoid folding the bag, but if you
must, only fold it once about the middle.
Take
one last walk around, looking for loose items.
4.
RETURNING THE BOAT
PLEASE
CLEAN THE BOAT PRIOR TO RETURN.
- Spray fiberglass surfaces with a
high-pressure water hose - do not use detergents, waxes, or any other
chemical.
- Gently wash mast, boom, and all
blocks and cleats with low-pressure water, again, please, no chemicals
of any
kind.
- Open lock box as in step 1 and
take card and garage key.
- Open gate with card and
immediately drive thru gate.
Note: Gate
will remain open for 45-60 seconds
- Disconnect tail-light plug.
- Remove safety chains.
- Lower tongue jack and uncouple
from towing vehicle.
- Re-lock coupler in closed
position.
- Put sail bag and cushion back in
boat (SAILS MUST BE DRY PRIOR TO STORAGE TO AVOID DAMAGE).
- Return life
preservers to storage area
behind garage door #5.
- Loosen tie-down strap.
- Roll the boat back into position
